The Grumman F3 represents one of the last biplanes in service as fighters with the US Navy, the last examples of this 1936 design being retired in 1943.
This colourful model represents a F3F-1 in service with USn fighter squadron VF-3, flying from USS Saratoga in April 1940. On the squadrons' strength were two notable pilots, the XO Jimmy Thach and Butch O'Hare, after whom Chicagos' airport was named!
This pre-war paint scheme features a bright yellow upper wing and silver fuselage with 'Felix & Bomb' logo, later developed into the 'Tomcatters' badge and carried through redesignation to VF-31 after WW2. Landing gear parts and a pilot figure are supplied.
