more | Dragon Wings 1/72 USN US NAVY F/A-18E Super hornet VFA-105 Gunslingers Diecast Aircraft Model (50296) The carrier-based fighter/attack aircraft, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, entered U.S. Navy service in 1999. It’s a very different aircraft to its predecessor the F/A-18 Hornet, being larger and more advanced. All the Navy’s F-14 Tomcat squadrons have now converted to the Super Hornet, with operational versions being the F/A-18E single-seater or F/A-18F two-seater. One squadron that flies the former is VFA-105 “Gunslingers”, which is based at NAS Oceana in Virginia. In fact it was the first East Coast squadron to transition to the Super Hornet, this taking place in July 2006. The “Gunslingers” also has the distinction of being the first operational Navy strike fighter squadron to be commanded by a female, when Commander Sara Joyner took command in March 2007.

more | Dragon Wings 1/72 US NAVY F/A-18E Super Hornet Royal Maces CAG BIRD (50314) VFA-27, or Strike Fighter Squadron 27, is a U.S. Navy fighter squadron that flies the F/A-18E Super Hornet. The unit is also known by its nickname “Royal Maces”, the mace being a medieval handheld weapon designed to pierce heavy armour. Such weapons were used by royal bodyguards in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and they came to symbolize authority and the rule of law and order. VFA-27’s F/A-18 Hornets participated in Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 flying against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, they also saw extensive combat in 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The squadron departed the USS Kitty Hawk in May 2004 in order to begin transitioning to the F/A-18E Super Hornet. This they duly completed at NAS Leemore in October of the same year.more..
more | Dragon Wings 1/72 US NAVY F/A-18E Super Hornet VFA-31 Tomcatters Diecast Model Aircraft (50136) The “Tomcatters” is a U.S. Navy strike fighter squadron based at NAS Oceana. This squadron VFA-31, flies the F/A-18E Super Hornet exclusively. Founded on 1 July 1935 as VF-1B “Shooting Stars”, the squadron has an illustrious history. Most recently it participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom while aboard USS Abraham Lincoln where it flew 585 sorties. At the time the “Tomcatters” were flying F-14D Tomcats. The unit’s farewell to its Tomcats occurred in September 2006 during the “Tomcat Sunset”. It was the Navy’s last operational Tomcat squadron and this will be reflected for time immemorial by their squadron name – “Tomcatters”! After this emotional farewell, VFA-31 began its transition to the F/A-18E Super Hornet and today the “Fighting 31” specializes in night fighting. This is summed up in their motto of “We get ours at night”.
more | Dragon Wings 1/72 F/A-18F VFA-213 Black Lions (50271) The multi-mission F/A-18E/F "Super Hornet" strike fighter is an upgrade of the combat-proven night strike F/A-18C/D. The Super Hornet will provide the battle group commander with a platform that has range, endurance, and ordnance carriage capabilities comparable to the A-6 which have been retired. The F/A-18E/F aircraft are 4.2 feet longer than earlier Hornets, have a 25% larger wing area, and carry 33% more internal fuel which will effectively increase mission range by 41% and endurance by 50%. The Super Hornet also incorporates two additional weapon stations. This allows for increased payload flexibility by mixing and matching air-to-air and/or air-to-ground ordnance. The aircraft can also carry the complete complement of "smart" weapons, including the newest joint weapons such as JDAM and JSOW

VF-11 began transitioning to the F/A-18 after its return from a deployment to Iraq with its F-14 Tomcats in 2004. Dragon Warbirds has released a fine new replica of an F/A-18F, the two-seat variant of the Super Hornet. The fighter entered service in 1999 but Dragon ensures this model is well up to 2007 standards. The form of the plane is accurately captured and all its sleek details are present.
