In 1947 the London Transport Board ordered 1500 Leylands, of which 500 were to be 8ft wide, based on the standard Leyland Titan PD2/3. The engine was a standard 9.8 litre 125bhp, derated for fuel economy and drive was by fluid flywheel and preselector gearbox, supplied by AEC. In general appearance the RTW resembled the RT closely, despite being based on Leylands own body structure, though the extra width was obvious. It was at the rear that the RTW was least like the rest of the RT family, the most obvious being the differently shaped emergency window and the Leyland style guttering. RTW4, registration number KGK 504 was delivered to Tottenham (AK) in June 1949 for service on route 41.
