Airfix F-117A Stealth Kit (Gift Set) (95033)
The futuristic F-117A fighter is probably the most recognisable aircraft flying today. Its unique shape allows it to fly undetected by radar, allowing for surprise attacks and covert defence. This kit allows you to build the Stealth in blue/grey camouflage as flown by the US Airfirce out of the Tonopah Base. The origins of the F-117A can be traced back to a 1978, Lockheed had test flown the smaller scale "Have Blue" Stealth prototypes, whilst the first pre-production F-117 flew on 15 June 1981. The first production F-117A deliveries were made to the secret test base at Tonopah, Nevada, in late 1982. To introduce the F-117A into USAF service, the 4450th Tactical Group was formed in 1980, equipped with A-7D Corsairs for daytime flying, whilst the F-117As were flown only at night. Such was the secrecy surrounding the whole F-117 programme that it was early 1990 before the type was officially unveiled to the public. In October 1989, the unit changed its title to the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing and in December that year some of its F-117As saw limited action in Operation "Just Cause" in Panama. From the opening moments of Operation "Desert Storm" in early 1991, F-117As of the 37th TFW played a major role in the night time precision bombing of targets inside heavily defended areas in Iraq. The F-117A is powered by two General Electric F404-GE-F1D2 non-afterburning turbofan engines, each developng 4,818kg (10,600lb) static thrust and giving a maximum speed of 1,034 km/h (646mph). Wing span: 13.19 m (43ft 4in). Length: 20.07m (65ft 11in). Height: 3.78m (12ft 5in). Armament: two GBU-10 or GBU-24 or GBU-27 907 kg (2,000 lg) laser guided bombs, or other weapons up to a maximum of 2270kg (5,000lb).
