Together with the Vickers Valiant, the Avro Vulcan and Handley Page Victor were known as the V bomber force and formed Britains nuclear deterrent at the height of the cold war years of the 1960's. The Vulcan B.2 low level tactical bomber had a maximum speed of 645mph with a ceiling of 65,000 ft. The Victor five seat strategic bomber had a very similar max. speed of 640 mph.
The Victor’s were converted later as inflight refuelling tankers, and flew in support of the Vulcan’s successful bombing raids on the Argentina held airfield at Port Stanley in the Falklands, during the Falklands war. | |
