more | Corgi 1/50 Krauss Maffei 8 Ton SDKFZ.7 half Track (CC60008) In anticipation of the Allied landings in 1944, several new SS armoured units were formed in the West and several that had been operating in Russia were sent across to help. One of these was SS Division Reich which had suffered heavy losses while fighting in the East. Though initially containing the Allied advance, SS units were soon on the defensive after the US breakthrough at St.Lo. The loss of German vehicles was staggering. By the end of August 1944 Das Reich had just fifteen tanks left. December 1944 saw the ill-fated Ardennes offensive and the final thrusts on Bastogne before Patton???s third Army broke through. The unit symbol for SS Division ???Reich??? was a ???Wolfsangel??? lying on one side, painted in yellow ochre. This sign was used throughout the war and can be seen on this typical SS Division SdKfz.7.

The German Army high command had long been expecting an Allied invasion of northern France, but had no means of knowing where precisely the strike would come, while Rundstedt (CIC) thought the landings would be made between Calais and Dieppe,Hitler prophetically indicated the central and more westerly stretches of the coast of Normandy. The Germans had 59 divisions spread over western Europe, but approximately half this number was static, and the remainder included only 10 armoured divisions. more.. | |
more | Corgi 1/50 Panther PzKpfw V Ausf D Kursk Russia 1943 (CC60201) The Panther was hurried into production for the 1943 advance on Kursk, before reliability problems had been sorted out. Although it went on to have a fiercesome reputation, with the US Army suggesting it took five Shermans to knock out a single Panther, the Battle of Kursk was an initial disaster for the Panzer-Regiments using it. (Note: The production model differs slightly from that depicted by the deletion of the machine gun on the front of the hull. This is to make the model more accurate)
